Henna , also known as Mehndi, is a dye prepared from the plant Lawsonia inermis also known as hina, the henna tree. Henna dye is used to create temporary body art by staining the skin.
It is important to note that the modern term “Henna tattoo” is a marketing term only. Henna does not tattoo the skin and is not considered tattooing.
Henna has been used to adorn bodies as part of social and holiday celebrations since the late Bronze Age.
